Frequently Asked Questions
Who installs the system?
We do, we will show you how to ensure optimal operation of the system at all times. All systems are inspected by ACTPLA (ACT) or Country Energy (NSW) prior to being switched on and connected to the mains electricity grid. If there is a blackout in the main electricity grid your system will automatically and safely shut down. All grid connect systems designed and installed by us comply with Australian Standards, Clean Energy Council and Local Electrical Requirements. Yes. Additional solar panels can be added at any time to increase generating capability but you might have to upgrade to a larger inverter. Alternatively if you plan to add additional solar panels later you could install a larger inverter now. Most insurers will allow you to include the system under your home and contents insurance, but please check with your insurance company first. *Warranties will differ with manufacturers There are two cell technologies that are prevalent in today's market, they are referred to as polycrystalline and mono-crystalline silicon. Some manufacturers will use one or the other technologies in the manufacture of their product some will use use both. It's important to keep in mind that a 100 watt module is a 100 watt module whether it was made from polycrystalline cells or monocrystalline cells. Silicone Polycrystalline Solar cells that are created from polycrystalline or (multi-crystalline) technology are cut from a silicon boule that is grown from multifaceted crystalline material, or a crystal that grows in multiple directions. Conventional multi-crystalline solar cells typically have a slightly lower efficiency resulting in larger individual cells and thus typically a slightly larger module. All of this has changed with the advent of the new silicon nitride multi-crystalline cells which are rated as high or even higher efficiency than similarly sized mono-crystalline cells. Silicone Mono-crystalline Solar cells that are created from mono-crystalline or (single crystal) technology are cut from a silicon boule that is grown from a single crystal, in other words a crystal that has grown in only one plane or (one direction). Single crystalline are more expensive to manufacture and typically have a slightly higher efficiency than do conventional polycrystalline cells resulting in smaller individual cells and thus typically a slightly smaller module. A kilowatt is 1000 watts – but what is a watt? A watt is a measurement of electrical power, and can be calculated from the multiplication of voltage and current. So if you have a 1kW system it could power approximately 10 x 100W traditional light bulbs or if you have energy efficient lighting, it could power more than 65 x 15W mini fluorescent bulbs. A 1kW installation could offset your power bill by as much as 20-30% for an average household. Most customers choose a roof mounted solar system for their homes and businesses. Several aspects will need to be evaluated to determine if your home is a good solar site, such as orientation, space available, shadows on the space available and your current electricity usage. The best site will be one with an adequate north-facing roof that has little or no shading. Customers participating in the scheme in the ACT will be paid a Feed-in Tariff @ 45.7 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) produced and in NSW paid a Feed-in Tariff @ 60 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) produced. These will normally show as a credit on your electricity bill. If your system is installed on or after 9 June 2009 it may be eligible for additional RECs under Solar Credits. Solar Credits is a mechanism under the expanded RET (Renewable Energy Target) which multiplies the number of RECs able to be created for eligible installations of SGU's (Solar Generation Unit). There is not means testing for Solar Credits under the legislation. Solar Credits will apply to the first 1.5 kilowatts (kW) of capacity installed. Generation from capacity above 1.5 kW will still be eligible for the standard 1:1 rate of REC creation. More information can be found on the website for the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator. A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is an electronic, tradeable commodity equal to 1 Megawatt hour of renewable energy generation. A REC is similar to a share certificate as it represents a unit of value and may be traded for financial return. More information can be found on the website for the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator. A base installation rate includes the grid connect system being installed on a pitched metal or tile roof facing north with appropriate surface area available, connecting the solar system, a new meter and inspection costs. Additional costs will be incurred for a flat roof; any equipment upgrades. If your current meter board won't accommodate the new meter, any required upgrades will be an additional cost. This will be discussed at the time of quotation. As every-one's needs are different and the amount of power required by individuals differs we can only give you a guide to cover your usage of electricity. Your current daily kilowatt(kw) usage from your electricity bill will give you an idea of the output from a solar power system required to meet your needs. With solar power gaining popularity, the demand is driving prices of equipment down, leading to your out of pocket expense being as little as $3800* for a 1 KW Suntech Grid Connect Solar System. *(based on current recs Price of $33)
Contact us for an obligation free quote and we will discuss your particular needs with you. We can also provide more information, and answer your questions at this time.
