Boatsheds

The majority of Australian Boatsheds can be found in the Mornington Peninsula with around 1300 boatsheds and bathing boxes situated along the foreshores. These brightly coloured buildings are usually made of wood and are used as a changing room and a place to house your boat when away on holiday.

Most of these boatsheds and bathing huts are situated on Coastal Crown Land and require a licence to be issued by the council to occupy the boatshed. A license is issued for an annual site fee, which will require you to maintain the property.

Many people build their own boatsheds in coastal towns. It can be a lot more convenient to buy a block of land and then build a boatshed with all the amenities to give you a home away from home rather than buy a boatshed on the foreshore, which has no amenities.

The boatsheds and beach huts that you see along the coast serve as nothing more than a little shack that you can change in and out of your bathing costumes and store a small boat. Some people store their barbeque along with tables and chairs for entertainment purposes when visiting the beach rather than continually bringing these things along with them from home everytime they head off on a holiday.

The beach huts and boatsheds do not have running water and electricity. This is one of the major reasons why many beach holidaymakers invest in building their own boatsheds.

Building you own boatshed or beach hut gives you the advantage of not only having a place to store your boat, but also the added advantage of sleeping accommodation when visiting the beach for a weekend or a week long holiday.

Buying a boat for your boatshed

With storage and accommodation covered for your beach holiday, we will now talk a little about buying a new boat. Buying a boat can be tricky if you don’t know exactly what you are looking for or new to the world of boating.

One of the best ways to learn about boats is by going to one of the many boatshows held around the country. These boat shows offer a terrific insight into the boats available for purchase and the prices that you can expect to pay for these boats.

You can also learn a great deal from not only the salesman on hand but the other visitors who have questions. While you may not know what questions to ask, someone else may, and it can only help your knowledge.

Buying second hand boats privately can be very cheap but you will need to bring along a mechanically minded friend to go over the boat and then you will need to do a check to see if the boat is paid for.

The Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) in NSW can tell you if any money is owing on the vessel or whether the boat has been reported stolen.
