Hair Piece

Unfortunately, most of us start losing our hair sooner or later. While it is more fashionable today to have the shaved head look there are many that prefer to wear a hairpiece instead. Common terms for a hair piece that you will hear include, wig or toupee.

A toupee and a wig are not the same thing. While both are made to wear on your head, a toupee is designed to cover a bald spot while a wig is made to cover your whole head.

Toupee

A toupee is usually a small hairpiece that is designed to cover bald spots at the top of the head. They can also be larger in size covering a greater area of ones head.

A toupee can be made from either synthetic or real hair and is worn by both men and women to cover a bald spot.

You can wear a toupee with the aid of an adhesive or with bands that hold the toupee in place.

Wig

A wig has been worn for several reasons through the ages, whether as a fashion accessory or to cover and hide a loss of hair. People also wear a wig to hide their loss of hair if they undergo surgery of undergo chemotherapy.

Both men and women can get a wig to hide the ageing process and save themselves from facing any social ridicule.

The loss of hair usually means a person is gaining years and a wig can be one way of clinging to their youth.

Costume Wigs

During the 17th and 18th centuries it was very common for people to wear wigs. Today we see those same wigs primarily as costume wigs in plays such as The Phantom of the Opera.

Everyday people can wear costume wigs for their own fun reasons. Whether it is to look the part at a costume party with a Cleopatra wig or display your personality with a Punk/Rock wig people are buying and hiring all different kinds of wigs for different reasons.

Hairpieces

Hairpieces have been around since before Christ with men trying to cover their balding heads to stay youthful and attractive. Today the sale of wigs is in decline with baldness accepted by more and more people in society with the stigma that was once associated with hair loss all but gone with most men preferring to get a number one haircut or have their head shaved at the barber.

100% human hairpieces and hair extension systems are more expensive than synthetic hairpieces and extensions. One of the advantages of a human hairpiece is that the look and feel of human hair is a natural look that can’t easily be detected in sunlight while synthetic hair tends to stand out from your own hair.

Synthetic hairpieces are cheap and easy to maintain. They do however have a short life expectancy so you will have to buy another hairpiece sooner rather than later depending on how often you wear your hairpiece. Heating can’t change the style of most synthetic hairpieces so if you want a different look then you will have to buy more than one hairpiece.
