How do I install fittings in my poly tank?

Outlet fitting:

Using a hole saw, auger or splayed bit cut a hole slightly bigger than the thread size

Ensure that the hole is not drilled too close to the base of the tank; at least 60mm from the bottom of the tank to the bottom of the fitting.

12mm outlet = 28-30mm cutting tool 40mm outlet = 50-52mm cutting tool

25mm outlet = 36-38mm cutting tool 50mm outlet = 61-62mm cutting tool

Remove loose nut from outlet leaving rubber washer on fitting and push through the outlet hole from the inside of tank. In smaller tanks that you are unable to access, we suggest using a broom handle (for length) with a nail on it- place the outlet on the nail then lower into tank and slide through the hole. Note** rubber washer must be in contact with inside wall of tank.

Whilst holding the fitting firmly from the inside of the tank, have someone fit the loose nut to the fitting from the outside and tighten. No other sealer is required. Do not over tighten fitting.

Use thread tape (approx 18 times) or paste when fitting tap or gate valve.

Overflow fitting: (see diagram below)

Using a Hole Saw cut a hole 98mm diameter into tank where overflow is required. (Any wood working tools, work with poly). Apply a small bead of silicone to the back of the flange fitting, place the fitting into the hole and insert 4 short self-tapping screws to secure. Be sure to fit pipe into the overflow flange to route the excess or overflow water away from the base of the tank.

Fitting Wall2wall tanks:

Wall2wall tanks must be on a heavy duty concrete base (the ground MUST be 100% compacted prior to pouring the concrete). Follow standard outlet & gate valve fitting instructions. Included with this tank are 2 wall brackets which MUST be attached to the tank and secured to a structurally sound wall using stainless steel screws provided. Should this tank fall over it has the potential for serious injury or could be fatal - so please secure correctly. If your brackets are not installed - your tank is not covered under our guarantee.

Center pole Installation:(These are for Large tanks only)

Once the tank has been placed in the final position, place the un-capped bottom of centre pole over nipple in center of tank floor. Slide capped end into center of tank roof. Drill a screw through the roof of tank into the capped center pole to secure pole in place.

Note: Centre-pole is cut to the correct length, do not shorten.

Do these tanks meet Australian Standards?

Rotathene® Tank Grade Colours comply with AS 2070 Part 1 & Part 8, Australian Standard for Food Contact. They have also been tested and certified by the Australian Water Quality Centre to AS/NZS 4020:2002 Australian Standard for testing of products for use in contact with drinking water.

What happens to my poly tank in a bushfire?

If you are in a rural area, or even the urban fringe, you should take into account the effects of bushfire on your water tank.

Contamination of tanks from floating ash can be a big issue, and a first-flush device can reduce this problem considerably. Poly tanks can melt down to the waterline if a bushfire gets too close, but in severe fires both metal and concrete tanks can become unusable.

It's always advisable to clear around your tanks, dont stack wood or other combustables close to tanks and it's also a good idea, and in some cases mandatory in a fire prone area to have a CFA outlet fitted to your tank.

Always have your tanks included in your insurance policy.

Can Poly tanks be recycled?

Yes, they can be completely recycled.

Polyethylene is already regularly recycled and used again in different products. The poly tank industry has shown a real concern for our environmental future by working with Auckland University on finding new ways to make it easy for tank owners to recycle their own tanks at the end of their product life.

Do Poly tanks have a "plastic" taste?

There is no “plastic taste”. Polyethylene is the same plastic as used in Poly water pipes. The material is tasteless. All material used is Food Grade, Virgin Polyethylene, and is UV Stabilised.

How long does a poly tank last?

There are poly tanks that have been giving loyal service storing liquids for over 30 years, however there is no definite "life" period for a poly tank.

As with any other product you buy, its "life" will depend on how you install and maintain it, after it leaves the factory and what the service environment is like. Most tanks will far outlive their warranty period, however the Australian & New Zealand Standard requires a design life of 10 years.

WaterStore provide a 10 year guarantee for all our poly tanks. You know you can trust a WaterStore Guarantee, as we are a family owned and run business that has been in operation for over twenty six years.

WaterStore were the first dedicated Poly tank manufacturers in Victoria, and one of the first in Australia. Many other Poly manufacturers have been in the business for only a short time, and may have changed hands a number of times.

Why should I choose a poly tank?

Plastic, or polyethylene (poly), water tanks are now the biggest selling sector of the booming water tank market. Polyethyelene has been developed and tested in the market place over many years for the manufacture of upright water storage containers.

Polyethylene cannot rot or corrode, and is UV stabilised for Australian & New Zealand conditions. It is also resistant to algae growth as a result of its formulation.

Water tanks made from polyethylene are available in a range of sizes and designs to suit your needs and to make an attractive addition to your home.

What is a septic tank?

A Septic tank is a storage tank used to contain and treat sewerage. Normally made from concrete or polyethylene, Septic systems must be approved by your local council, check with them for any requirements

Where can I find more information on Greywater requirements?

Greywater (all non-toilet household wastewater) can be a good water resource during times of drought and water restrictions, but its re-use can carry health and environmental risks.

By following a few simple steps, greywater can be re-used effectively and safely in domestic situations.

Click on the link below to view an article released by the EPA on greywater use...

http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/water/reuse/reuse.asp

What is grey water?

Greywater is household wastewater that has not come into contact with toilet waste. It comes from the bath, shower, bathroom wash basins, washing machines, and laundry trough.

Wastewater from the kitchen sink and dishwasher should not be re-used, as these can contain heavy loads of organic material, fats and caustic additives.

What colours do water tanks come in?

We have many different colors available. Most of the colours are similar to the Colourbond range so this helps you to match your tank with your roof, shed or fence.

The names for the Colourbond colours change regularly, so if you cannot see your colour listed here, chances are it's probably known under a different name. Please give us a call if you're not sure.

Alternatively, you can download a colour chart under the "download" section on this site *please note that some monitors show the colors differently*

The most popular colors are:

  • Light green
  • Beige
  • Slate grey
  • Heritage Red
  • Heritage Green
  • Wheat
  • Merino
  • Mountain Blue
  • Black
  • Sandbank
  • Birch Grey
  • Torres Blue
  • Smooth Cream

Many more colours are also available. Please contact us for availability of any Colourbond colours that are not listed above.

Do I need to clean my water tank?

Rainwater is harvested from roofs, channelled down gutters and through downpipes. These surfaces can also catch dirt, dust and insects that can be captured in your water tank through the water collection process. Leaf strainers, gutter guards and water diverters all provide protection against dirt and dust entering your tank.

Over a period of time, your water tank will build up sludge and muck that sits on the bottom and the walls of your water tank (especially if it has corrugated walls). There are many things which contribute to this such as:

  • wood fires (smoke can settle on your roof)
  • high tree areas (sticks and leaves can fall on your roof)
  • high traffic areas (polution from traffic can settle on your roof)
  • some new roofs (they have a clear film which eventually wears off)
  • Animals (dead possums, birds, mice etc)
  • Mosquitos (which can lay eggs and breed)
  • Eucalyptus (from over hanging trees) etc

It is recommended that you clean out your tank regularly every 2-3 years to avoid such issues occuring.

Straight (smooth sided) water tanks are the easiest to clean. How do you clean your tank?

  1. Once the tank is empty, spray down the inside of your water tank with a hose.
  2. Use a medium bristled broom to scrub down the walls. (do not use chemicals)
  3. Give the wall a final rinse and wash any muck out through the outlet.
  4. Your tank is now right to fill again.

For further information you can download a copy of 'Your private drinking water suppy' which has been published by the Victorian Government Department of Human Resources which is a guide to cleaning out your tank.

I want a water tank, where do I start?

There are a few factors to consider when buying your first tank. You many want to consider the following:

  • What is the tank being used for?
  • Where will I put the tank and how much room do I have?
  • How will I put the tank into position? (consider fences and driveway access)
  • How much water can I catch off my roof?
  • What is my budget?

There is a handy 'house hold water requirements' pdf which you can easily view in the 'download' section of our web site. Alternatively, give us a call and we will be happy to provide you with some free advice to work out the right tank for your house.

  • 9,000 litre tanks require at least 2 people on site to help.
  • 22,700 and 33,750 litre tanks require a minimum of 3 people on site to help.

Helpers should be fit, strong and in good health. *It is not advisable to be a helper if you are pregnant or elderly*

What time is my delivery arriving?

The dispatch team will call you 2 days before your day of delivery to give you an estimated time of arrival and confirm your order.

Our drivers will also call you approx 30 minutes prior to arriving on your site, and will also advise you if they are running early or late.

We endeavor to arrive within the time frame we have given you, however, a hold up on a previous delivery, traffic accidents or road detours may throw our schedule out for the whole day, and we may be early or late for reasons beyond our control.

In the event that the estimated arrival time will be affected, we will contact you to advise of this as soon as possible.

How big is the delivery truck?

Prior to delivery please check the following:

  • You have a FIVE METRE HEIGHT CLEARANCE –Our delivery trucks are 2.5mtr wide x 4.6mth Height x 18mtrs Length
  • There are no trees or overhanging branches that will obstruct access to your property
  • Ensure there are no trees on site that may obstruct navigation around your property
  • Please ensure that our trucks can turn around after delivery (as most trucks are towing a trailer)

Can our truck access your site without getting bogged?

During the wetter months, please make sure our truck can access your site without getting bogged. If our driver thinks he will not be able to access your site because it is too boggy or wet, and the tank cannot be rolled into position, the driver will leave tanks in a convenient place for you to move at your convenience

Do you have to lift your tank over a fence or other obstacle?

You may need to organise extra helpers to get your tank in position. Our driver will fit the tank and leave it with you, as sometimes this can be a lengthy process, and he has other deliveries that he needs to deliver on time.

How do I prepare a base?

Concrete Slab
The no-compromise solution to base construction is a reinforced 100mm concrete slab. A slab can be square or round. The base should always be 100mm larger than the diameter of the tank. Prior to pouring the slab, ensure the ground has been 100% compacted. Your base will be compromised if soil has not been compacted and will affect your tank guarantee.

Crusher Dust/Sand
A crusher dust/sand base is considerably cheaper than a concrete slab, but may need to be augmented over time. Heavy rain falls can erode a crusher dust base and may cost you extra if it needs to be repaired.

It’s best to use treated pine sleepers, screwed together at the ends to create a retainer for the crusher dust/sand but many other materials are appropriate. Ensure base is compact and sturdy prior to laying down the crusher dust/sand. Base should be anywhere from 25mm to 50mm high when compacted. Crusher dust or sand is available from any landscape material suppliers.

Pre-Cast Concrete Slabs

A series of pre-cast concrete slabs or pavers on a sealed bed of sand makes an appropriate base for a slim cylinder tank or a tank stand.***Please note that all Wall tanks must be on a concrete base for safety.

  1. Prepare a flat area for your tank. Clear an area that is 300mm wider than the diameter of your tank.
  2. Make sure the ground is 100% compacted and that there are no rocks, stumps, tree roots or anything else that could affect/damage the base of your tank and void your guarantee.
  3. Place sand on base. Put in a bed of sand (packing or river sand) about 25mm to 50mm thick. Bluestone dust is also acceptable, just ensure it is well packed down.
  4. Flat & Level. Make sure your base is flat and level so that the base of the tank is fully supported.
  5. Tank delivery. Once the tank is delivered and fitted, put either sleepers, pavers or bricks around your site and box the sand in. This is important, as it keeps your base stable and prevents the sand from washing away.
