Buying a solar battery is one of the smartest upgrades you can make, especially if you already have solar. But there are some surprisingly common mistakes Australians make that can turn a smart investment into a headache pretty quickly.

Consider this your "don't get stitched up" guide to buying a home battery. Eleven mistakes we see week in, week out, and how to sidestep every one of them.

Mistake #1: Analysis paralysis (aka never actually buying one)

The biggest mistake is not getting a battery at all.

So many people get stuck comparing products, waiting for the "perfect deal", or overthinking every decision. Meanwhile, electricity prices keep climbing, the federal battery rebate keeps stepping down, and every month you wait is another month of paying peak rates when your solar system has been generating cheap power all day.

A well-sized battery starts saving you money the moment it's installed. The trick is picking a trusted installer and a system that suits your home, then getting on with it. Perfect is the enemy of installed.

Mistake #2: Going for the cheapest quote

A cheap home battery quote is tempting, but it's usually a red flag.

Bargain-basement batteries often mean lower safety standards, shorter lifespans, patchy warranty coverage and limited Australian support. Worst case, they can be genuinely unsafe. We've all seen the news stories about dodgy imports catching fire.

If one quote is dramatically cheaper than the others, ask why. Make sure you're comparing apples with apples: same battery size, same warranty terms, same install scope, same backup functionality. The best batteries are backed by proven performance, solid warranties, safety certifications and real people you can actually get on the phone.

Mistake #3: Not having enough solar to charge the battery

One of the biggest issues we see: people buying a big battery without enough solar to actually fill it.

Here's the analogy we like to use: Your battery is a schooner glass. Your solar system is the tap. If the tap barely drips, the glass never fills.

A large battery paired with a puny solar system ends up charging from the grid, which can defeat the whole point and hammer your savings.

Now, grid charging isn't always the enemy. Off-peak and smart-charging plans work well alongside a home battery, especially if you can top up during cheap (or even free) windows. A great setup combines both: enough solar to charge the battery on most days, plus smart grid top-ups on cloudy winter days when solar production drops.

The key is balance. Some grid top-up flexibility is smart. Massively oversizing your battery relative to your solar isn't.

For most Aussie homes, around 10 kW of solar is the sweet spot for keeping a battery charged year-round (roof space permitting). If your roof can't fit that much, don't oversize the battery. 

Mistake #4: Locking in on one brand without comparing

Some people hear about one brand of battery, latch onto it, and stop looking. It might turn out to be the right one, but depending on your home and usage, there could be a better fit.

Different batteries offer different strengths:

  • Better upfront pricing
  • Higher continuous power output (matters if you want to run bigger appliances during a blackout)
  • Modular expansion options (adding more capacity later)
  • Stronger warranty terms
  • Better local support and installer network

Mistake #5: Assuming every battery includes blackout backup

This is one of the most common misunderstandings. Not every battery keeps your home running during a blackout.

Some batteries only back up a few essential circuits (fridge, lights, internet). Others can power your whole home during a blackout. And plenty of systems don't include any backup hardware by default.

Some installers leave blackout protection off the quote to make the sticker price look cheaper, then it becomes an unexpected cost later or, worse, never gets done at all. Then the blackout hits and you're sitting there in the dark next to your very expensive very not-working battery.

Always ask specifically: does this quote include blackout backup, and what exactly will it power?

Mistake #6: Confusing kW with kWh

Another one that trips people up: the difference between kW and kWh.

  • kWh (kilowatt-hours) = capacity. How much energy your battery can store. Back to the schooner analogy: this is how much beer fits in your schooner.
  • kW (kilowatts) = power. How fast your battery can deliver that energy through your inverter. This is how fast you're drinking the beer.

A 10 kWh battery with a 5 kW inverter can run a 5 kW load for two hours. The same battery with a 10 kW inverter can run a 10 kW load for one hour. 

Regardless of whether you plan to run your whole home during a blackout, charge an EV, or run heavy appliances off battery power, you need both your battery and your inverter sized correctly for your usage. We will size both properly for you.

Mistake #7: Assuming you can just "add more later"

You might think: “I’ll start small and add more battery capacity later.”

Sometimes yeah, you can do this, sometimes you can’t.

Some batteries are genuinely modular and easy to expand. Others can’t be expanded at all. And some only work with the exact same model or generation, which might be discontinued or unavailable by the time you’re ready to add more.

If you know you’ll want more capacity down the track, choose a modular system upfront. Or better yet, size it right the first time.

Mistake #8: Missing out on the federal battery rebate

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program won’t stick around forever. The rebate drops every six months, and you can generally only claim it once per property, based on your battery’s total installed capacity at the time.

That means there are two ways to miss out: waiting too long and claiming the rebate after its value has dropped, or installing a smaller battery now and discovering later that you can’t claim another rebate when you expand it.

If you’re planning to get a battery, it pays to get the timing and size right the first time so you can claim the rebate at its best available value and avoid leaving thousands of dollars on the table. 

Mistake #9: Sizing for today, not tomorrow

Your energy use today probably won't be your energy use in 2 or 3 years.

Maybe you'll get an EV. Maybe you'll install air-con. Maybe you'll ditch gas cooking, gas hot water and gas heating and go fully electric. All of these mean bigger energy needs, which means more battery capacity.

If you size your system only for right now, you can box yourself in later. Future-proof your system by planning ahead.

Mistake #10: Thinking you can't add a battery to existing solar

If you already have solar, you can (in almost every case) add a battery.

  • If your inverter is hybrid-compatible (aka battery-ready), a battery install is more straightforward
  • If it's not, we can add an AC-coupled battery which works alongside your existing system by connecting through your switchboard

Almost every modern solar system can be retrofitted with a battery. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Mistake #11: Overlooking warranty and support

The simplest mistake of the lot: not checking the warranty and support behind the system.

Some warranties cover parts only, not labour or freight (huge difference in real-world claim cost). Others go up in smoke the moment the retailer or manufacturer disappears from the market, which happens more often than you'd think in an industry with as much churn as this.

When choosing a home battery, check:

  • A strong manufacturer warranty
  • Clear coverage terms
  • Australian support presence
  • A retailer that'll still be around in 5-10 years to actually honour the install warranty
