About

Tesla

Tesla. You probably know the name. The same team behind Tesla EVs has spent the last decade quietly bolting Powerwall batteries onto more than a million homes around the world, and along the way, turned the Powerwall into one of the most premium home batteries on the market.

Tesla designs and builds the Powerwall at its Gigafactory in Nevada, USA, using the same battery expertise that goes into its cars. The current model, the Powerwall 3, launched in Australia in September 2024 and is the most significant Powerwall redesign yet: built from the ground up around a single integrated unit instead of the separate battery-plus-inverter setup the Powerwall 2 needed.

The Tesla app, by the way, is what actually makes a Powerwall a Powerwall. It's the gold standard for home energy monitoring: you'll see your solar generation, your usage, your battery's state of charge, the lot, in real time. And if you've also got a Tesla car and EV charger, you can monitor those in the same app.

Introducing the Tesla Powerwall 3

The Powerwall 3 is Tesla's most advanced home battery to date, and an epic one at that. The thing you'll notice first: there's a solar inverter built right into the battery, so your install looks super neat with just your Powerwall module(s). The thing that matters on the inside: the Powerwall 3 delivers up to 11.04 kW of continuous power. Tesla markets it as a whole-home backup battery, and it lives up to it.

What you get with a Powerwall 3:

  • Built-in solar inverter (97.5% efficiency): no separate inverter on the wall.
  • 13.5 kWh usable storage: enough for an average Aussie home overnight.
  • 11.04 kW continuous power: runs the whole house.
  • Up to 20 kW of solar input across 3 MPPTs: works with big arrays and tricky multi-roof setups.
  • Supports full-home backup: can keep everything running when the grid goes down.
  • Tesla app: monitor, optimise and control your energy from anywhere.
  • LFP battery chemistry: safe, stable, and rated for thousands of cycles.
  • Expandable: add up to 3 Powerwall 3 Expansion units for a total of 54 kWh of storage.
  • IP67 outdoor-rated: built to withstand the elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a Powerwall 3 to my existing Powerwall 2?

Not yet, but Tesla has announced that a software update is coming soon that will make the Powerwall 3 compatible with the Powerwall 2. Once that's live, we'll be able to add a Powerwall 3 to your existing Powerwall 2 set-up.

Is the Tesla Powerwall 3 eligible for the federal battery rebate?

Yep, fully eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The rebate's applied upfront as a discount on your quote, so you only pay the net amount. We handle every bit of the paperwork. Tesla's own limited-time cashback rebate (up to $1,500) stacks on top as well, which Tesla pays out after install.

Where is the Tesla Powerwall 3 made?

At Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada, USA, the same facility Tesla uses to build its other battery products. Over a million Powerwalls have now come out of it globally.

Can the Powerwall 3 charge my electric car?

Yes, but if you're home during the day, your smartest play is to charge during the day so you can save your evening battery capacity for the house. If you're mostly charging overnight, you might need more battery capacity than a single Powerwall holds, so you could potentially look at adding additional module(s). This is something we can work through with you when we do your quote. Tesla also makes its own home EV charger: pair it with a Powerwall 3 and your solar, battery, home and car can all live seamlessly integrated in the same app.

Can I have more than one Tesla Powerwall 3?

Yes. You can pair a Powerwall 3 with up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units, giving you a total of 54 kWh of usable storage. The Expansion units are battery-only (they piggyback off the inverter in the main unit), which keeps the cost down. Worth doing if you've got a big home, high evening usage, or you're thinking ahead about EV charging.

What's the warranty on the Tesla Powerwall 3?

Ten years, parts and labour, direct from Tesla. The battery's guaranteed to retain at least 70% of its original usable capacity at the 10-year mark under standard residential use (solar self-consumption, time-of-use, and backup).

How long does it take to install a Tesla Powerwall 3?

A typical residential install is one day, with a team of two. More complex jobs (long cable runs, multiple Powerwalls, three-phase switchboards) can take a bit longer. We'll give you a clear timeline when we book the job.

Can I add a Tesla Powerwall 3 to my existing solar system?

Yes. The Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in, so most installs either replace your existing inverter (worth doing if it's getting old) or run alongside it as a battery-only solution. Which option makes more sense depends on the age and condition of your current setup. We'll work it out in your free quote.

Does the Powerwall 3 work during a blackout?

Yep, and well. The Powerwall 3 is designed to support full-home backup, and it can deliver up to 11.04 kW continuously. Really big homes with heavy draw might need an additional Powerwall unit or two to keep everything running, but for most Aussie houses one is plenty. Switchover when the grid drops is fast enough that most appliances won't even blink.

What's the difference between Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3?

A lot. The Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in (the Powerwall 2 didn't), more than double the continuous power output (11.04 kW vs 5 kW), three solar inputs for flexible roof layouts (the Powerwall 2 was AC-coupled only), and a switch from NMC to safer, longer-lasting LFP battery chemistry. The Powerwall 2 is no longer sold in Australia. If you're getting a new Powerwall in 2026, it's a Powerwall 3.

How much does a Tesla Powerwall 3 cost in Australia?

It depends. Every home's different: your existing solar setup, where the battery's going to live, your switchboard, your state, they all move the number around. The best move is to get a free quote and we'll give you a real one customised for your home. The federal rebate is baked into your quote upfront as well.
